Despite early OT snub, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] wins it after all
Kubiak says he called for punt because of breeze
LANDOVER, Md. — [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] refused to take it personally.
Although the Texans' new kicker admitted he didn't necessarily agree with head coach Gary Kubiak's decision to punt the ball away on the first series of overtime Sunday rather than let him attempt an heroic 52-yard field, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] put a positive spin on the call.
"For me, if you don't want to be on the field, find a different job," he said, "But I took it as (Kubiak) has a lot of faith in our defense and rightfully so. We won the ball game. Obviously, he made the right call."
The Texans defense did stop the Redskins - with another deft move by Kubiak, who subsequently froze Washington's kicker, Graham Gano, by asking for a timeout - and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] got his chance after all, from 17 yards closer.
Money. Texans 30, Redskins 27.
"This means a lot," said Rackers, who was signed in the off-season and beat out the incumbent Kris Brown during a hotly contested preseason competition. "I've been working with these guys for six months now, and I've enjoyed the heck out of them. They're a hard-working ball club and it's nice to come through for them in a key situation."
Quarterback Matt Schaub, dressing nearby, corrected Rackers' grammar.
"Not 'they,' " Schaub said. "Us."
Kubiak's explanation
Kubiak surely understood that his sending out punter Matt Turk instead of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] might be misinterpreted, but head coaches are paid a lot of money to make those kind of decisions. Kubiak said he went "with my gut," and he wound up looking like a genius.
"There was a little breeze coming that way (into Rackers' face)," Kubiak said. "If you miss that (from the Redskins' 34), they've got to go 20 yards to beat us. I felt good about our defense. I thought they'd made a few nice stops in the quarter. It's one of those things that just worked out. If it doesn't work out, it's not good, but it worked out.
"(Rackers) said, 'Coach, I'm OK. I'm good. But there was obviously a breeze coming from that end because all the kickoffs coming from the other way were so much longer. He told me after the game, 'You know I would have made that.' I said, 'Well, now you tell me.' "
Turk's punt landed in the end zone despite the Texans drawing a deliberate delay-of-game penalty to move him five yards further back, so the Redskins took over at the 20, just 14 yards from where they would have been had Kubiak let [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] kick. Turk was mad at himself for not burying Washington, but he praised Kubiak's thought process.
"That was just the call made by the head coach, and it ended up being a great call," he said. "It was borderline, right at the cutoff distance (for a field goal). We were going into a little breeze, and if you don't hit it perfectly clean, the ball doesn't go anywhere. I'm not happy with the punt, but I'm happy with the end result."
Timeout works out
The timeout also turned out splendidly for the Texans and Kubiak, who waited so long to signal for it that Gano already was swinging his leg through the ball while the officials frantically were waving their arms. He drilled it straight and true, too. What became a 52-yard practice kick would have been good from 62.
Yet Gano shanked the one that counted wide right and the Texans took possession on their own 42. Eight plays later, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] trotted on to calmly do his job.
Finally.
"I just wanted to make sure we'd make them line up and do it again," Kubiak said. "The bottom line is you miss one of those and the field position totally flips."
Instead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] wound up all but turning flips.
"I'm pretty sure I looked similar to a high school cheerleader," he said. "I ran around by myself for a second. It's real nice to have your teammates come over and congratulate you after a big win."
