Symbolism in The Tortilla Curtain
Literature Review
a literary go holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn trenchant wit [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], satire, or sarcasm used to disclose and discredit vice alternatively folly.
The Epigraph
According to Merriam-Webster irony is:
At the beginning of his novel, Boyle quotes from John Steinbecks prestigious novel The Grapes of Wrath They aint human. A human being wouldnt live like they do. A human creature couldnt stand it to be so dirty and pathetic. Boyles epigraph sets the intonation as the lives and location of the Mexican protagonists, Candido and America Rincon. Unfortunately [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nothing changes for them during the way of the novel.
Boyles use of the Steinbeck quote too reveals the stereo-typical attitude of the white people in the novel, including his American protagonists, Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher. Whenever white Americans watch a Mexican [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they cringe. It doesnt matter namely the Mexicans are by the foundation of their affluence; they do not want to watch them.
Ostensibly, T.C. Boyle’s novel The Tortilla Curtain is approximately how people effect and defend their American Dream. And it is almost the mores clash among white upper-middle level Americans and Mexican unlawful immigrants. However, the symbolic undercurrent reveals the animal nature of entire people regardless of their class and station in society.
A Satire
Often, the best course of revealing vice and folly is to clutch a mirror up and reflect the stereotypical persona to the reader. It is hazardous to clutch a mirror with a stereotype or caricature to the reader; too constantly the reader takes the distortion for reality and misses the intention of the writer.
Unfortunately, most readers seem to miss out on the fact that Boyle wrote a satire. If 1 scans the reviews at Goodreads, one finds irate readers using words like trite, clichéd, and ham fisted while arguing Boyles introduction of the characters in this book.
