Tom Brady and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are two of the most passionate quarterbacks in the National Football League. They’re also total douche bags, but given the large quantity of self-absorbed meatheads that play football americano, I’ll try not to hold that against them. The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots sport one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL, a rivalry intensified over the past decade due to the numerous playoff games they’ve played against one another. In other words, tonight’s Sunday Night Football was a television executives dream.
It doesn’t hurt that both quarterbacks have had their fair share of controversy over the season; [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] with charges of assault,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Brady with his hair-fueled spat with Randy Moss helped contribute to their larger than life personalities. I’m no ratings expert, but I can tell you this: names like Brady and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] sell. And if they’re playing well (or passing a lot), most avid football fans will at least have the game on in the background.
Sunday Night Football already has a large viewer base intact, their current goal is to retain and to expand. The best way to do that? Put on a good program. Sometimes, the best way to put on a good sports program is to avoid being intrusive and just letting the game speak for itself. That being said, a few added treats here and there can’t hurt. Treats like decent broadcasting, fancy graphics, sweet camera angles, and a tolerable half-time show is what separates a mediocre program from a great program.
No sports program is perfect; and most sports fans know that a nationally televised sporting event is never quite as good as a home broadcast (See: The MLB Postseason). Regardless, Sunday Night Football has consistently improved over the season in the ways that it can. For instance, Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth are both extremely knowledgeable football guys; but, they are occasionally as stiff as a couple of mummified corpses. Thankfully, they’ve warmed up as the season has progressed and that has made Sunday Night Football a much more enjoyable experience. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
While they aren’t the most memorable broadcasters to ever call a National Football League game, they’re also not Joe Buck - one of the most maligned broadcasters of all time. Tonight’s game can be considered a success from a broadcasting standpoint; they won’t be winning any Emmys, but there was a noticeable lack of waffling and nonsense; which is a problem that has plagued Al and Cris since week one.
One thing I really enjoy about Sunday Night Football is the on screen graphic work that they provide every week. Football and intense robotic machinery is a match made in television heaven. There’s no dancing robot (see: FOX) but there’s a variety of widgets that showcase player stats and, you know, the ivy-league school they got into for free while straight-a students struggle to pay for the application fee. Financial inequalities aside (no, I don’t really care) Sunday Night Football has grown on me over this season, and I look forward to covering the final half. While I don’t get to see my 49ers again (who gave me their third win of the season for my birthday today, score) I’m certainly looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season pans out.
