Of droughts and flooding rains [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
A land of sweeping plains,
While generations of Australian students have narrated the poem in class, many still forget that the poem does not start with the iconic and versed lines:
Reflecting the inspiration of the poem, a frustration with the many early Australians who felt more allegiance and affection as the mommy country of England than their homeland of Australia, the 1st stanza refers to the English countryside.
Born in Sydney in 1885 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Isobel Marion Dorothea Mackellar was the only daughter of surgeon and Senator Sir Charles Kinnaird Mackellar and his wife Marion. Dorotheas upbringing was privileged. She pushed in essence circles as a socialite and her kin owned meaningful property either in Sydney and in rustic New South Wales.
Mackellar began manuscript her iconic poem in 1904 with the first version to be published four years letter beneath the heading Core of my Heart. The poem was included in The Closed Door, Mackellars first anthology of poems promulgated in Australia in 1911.
Of green and shaded lanes,
Dorothea Mackellar’s My Country is a beauteous award book for ex-pat Australians, international guests and for anybody who loves the Australian landscape. With a separate photograph attaching every line of the poem from the second stanza along, this book compliments Mackellars intent to celebrate always that is beautiful and individual about her homeland of Australia.

Of arrayed woods and gardens
Dorothea Mackellar’s My Country (ISBN: 978-17419-6281-9. 95 pages)
While Mackellars poem stands alone as a work of art, Peter Luck has brought to this century version a collection of stunning scenery photographs namely are a perfect visual accompaniment to the poem.
Is fleeing in your veins,
The love of field and coppice,
Of seedy mountain ranges,
To commemorate one hundred years since English journal The Spectator published Dorothea Mackellars poem, realized photographer and television journalist Peter Luck has produced a spectacular collection of photographs to praise the beauty of the poem itself. Dorothea Mackellars My Country: a centenary celebration 1908 2008 (Pier 9, 2008) attempts not only a celebration of the poem itself, yet likewise concise insights into the life of the poet.
The longevity and popularity of the poem are perhaps explained along the truth that it is not barely lyrically beautiful but also a no-holds-barred detailing of the challenges facing Australians harsh droughts and bushfires, flooding rains and grim heat as well as the beauty and visual clash of the landscape.
The stanza ends with Mackellars expression My love is otherwise and she then continues with 5 stanzas celebrating the colours [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], contrasts, landscape and raspy prettiness of Australia.
