Rumours have surfaced of Kate Winslet playing the kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch, the young girl who escaped her abductor last year. This just might be another bold move by Winslet who isn’t shy of taking risks when it comes to her film choices. She is often rewarded such as in last year’s Oscars when she was nominated for Revolutionary Road, a film which reunited her with Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio and The Reader in which she played a German guard at a concentration camp. But she is a very typical looking movie star, attractive and glamorous yet her film choices with the exception of Titanic tend to avoid the mainstream. Here is a look at three of her defining roles.
The role of a girl who in order to avoid separation from her best friend will resort to murder hardly seems a typical film debut, but Winslet excelled in the part becoming so involved in it that she and Melanie Lynskey would spend ages after shooting having conversations as their prospective characters. This really would set the tone for the rest of her career as she continued to take risks and plump for roles that presented her with more of a challenge.
Heavenly Creatures
The multimillion film directed by James Cameron told the story of a blossoming romance struck down early when the famous liner hit ice and sank. She played Rose, a high society sort of gal who falls in love with Leonardo DiCaprio’s poor scamp. Her breakthrough role came in Peter Jackson’s tale of murder and obsession.
