Caffaro and Conn-Caffaro suggest that to ignore sibling abuse could impose a hefty price on families. "Our complacency regarding sibling assault needs to be shaken," they say. Citing a 1980 study by Straus et al, who estimated that almost 2 million children had used a gun or a knife on a sibling at some point, the authors write that families must recognize that, "Children are capable of violent, sometimes fatal attacks on their brothers and suggests that families frequently protect perpetrators of sibling abuse,Cheap Air Jordans 2010 Southern Living Collection, effectively shielding them from the consequences of their actions. This protection they say, "Shields them from dealing with the consequences of their actions," which means that neither the abuser nor the victim, gets the help that they need. As well as perpetuating the violence and allowing the abuser to continue, concludes Sasian, the victim without treatment, "Will

Characteristics of sibling abuse families
In "Sibling Abuse is Quite Common and Often Overlooked by Parents," John Caffaro, PhD, writes at Aamft.org, that, "Parents often overlook, ignore, or deny cruel behavior between their children." In some cases, this failure to recognize an escalation of aggression, can lead to tragic consequences that shock parents to their very core, leaving them dumbfounded by the actions of one sibling towards another.
Sibling rivalry has been an accepted norm by many parents, but sometimes, one child escalates the aggression into outright bullying or sexual abuse. With research showing that parents have a difficult time defining and recognizing when sibling rivalry crosses the line, parents may wish to learn the characteristics that can contribute to sibling abuse and elevate aggression.
John V. Caffaro and Allison Conn-Caffaro write in the book, Sibling Abuse Trauma: Assessment and Intervention Strategies for Children that, "Sibling abuse victims are frequently subjected to multiple forms of abuse by the same offender." Several characteristics, the authors say, are typically present in a sibling abuse family. These include:
The Sibling Abuse Survivors' Information & Advocacy Network at Sasian.org, says that sibling abuse and sibling sexual abuse is, "Probably the most accepted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and ignored,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], form of domestic violence." Citing Dr. Vernon Wiehe, author of Perilous Rivalry: When Siblings Become Abusive, Sasian reports that Wiehe concludes that, "As many as 53 out of every 100 children abuse a brother or sister;" a statistic that actually rates higher than both spousal and child abuse. Furthermore writes Wiehe in direct reference to the nature of the abuse, "What some kids do to their brother or sister inside the family would be called assault outside the family."
